MARIANNE DE ROO

CADENZA
8 / 1 / 2026 - 21 / 2 / 2025

Cadenza

1: a parenthetical flourish in an aria or other solo piece commonly just before a final or other important cadence. 2. : a technically brilliant, sometimes improvised solo passage toward the close of a concerto.

Marianne De Roo's paintings take form after a long process of preparation, pondering, collecting and condensing ideas into visual form. Only then is the paintbrush taken in her hand, and with her trademark gestural flourishes the painted image emerges finally onto the canvas. It is a cadenza that brings the work to its finality.

The intimate scale of the paintings in this exhibition speaks to the intense focus of the artist’s vision, she expresses herself in her unique lyrical language. Cadenza is presented as a cohesive collection of new work produced over the last two years.

In her own words:

“In my work I am free to shed light and shadow as I see fit. I seek absence, balance and discrepancy. And I contemplate. I thrive on disobedience, do not take things for granted, do not listen to many. But there is no purpose in art, and that is its strength. In contrast to everything that "needs to be", art does not need to be anything. In there, I have found a vast freedom to create whatever I want.”
